Placing a first bet on the Cricbet99 exchange with stake and exposure shown on screen
The bet slip on a match odds market: price, stake, and the profit that stake returns.

The first bet is the one everybody gets wrong, and almost never because they picked the wrong team. They get it wrong because the screen is showing eleven numbers and they only understand two of them. So they tap something, a figure appears in red, their balance drops by more than they expected, and the next twenty minutes are spent trying to work out what just happened.

I have watched a friend do exactly this. He laid a favourite at 1.35 for what he thought was ₹500, and when the balance dropped he genuinely believed the platform had taken his money. It had not. He had simply not read the liability line. The bet behaved perfectly. He just did not know what he had agreed to.

This guide is the conversation I wish somebody had had with him first. It assumes you have an account already, either through the registration process or handed to you by a manager, and that there are some points sitting in it. If you do not have either yet, get a demo ID and read this with practice credits instead. The screen is identical and the mistakes cost nothing.

Before you tap anything

Three decisions are worth making before you open the app, because all three become harder once a live match is on your screen and the price is moving.

Decide the amount first. Not the amount you could afford to lose in theory, the amount you would be genuinely indifferent about losing tonight. For most people reading this that is somewhere between ₹100 and ₹500. Write it down. The whole purpose of a first bet is to watch the machinery work, and machinery works exactly the same on ₹100 as it does on ₹10,000.

Decide the market second. Match odds on a big fixture. Not a session, not a fancy bet on runs in the fourteenth over, not the casino tab. Match odds move slowly enough that you can actually see cause and effect, which is the entire point of a first bet.

Decide when you will stop, third. One bet tonight. That is the plan. It sounds unnecessary until you win ₹92 on your first attempt and your brain immediately suggests that four more of those would be even better. That instinct is the reason our responsible gaming page exists, and it is worth reading before you have a good night rather than after a bad one. Betting is strictly for adults over 18, and the speed of an exchange makes it very easy to do a week of damage in an evening.

The walkthrough

Six steps, start to settlement

Follow these in order the first time. Improvise later, once the numbers mean something.

Choose one market

Sign in through the login page, open a fixture that is either about to start or already running, and go to match odds. You will see the two teams with a pair of prices against each. Ignore everything below that section for tonight. A single IPL game can carry sixty priced markets, and forty of them are designed for people who already know what they are doing.

Read the two prices

Every selection shows two figures side by side. The blue box on the left is the back price: what you get if you bet on that team winning. The pink box on the right is the lay price: what you are quoted to bet against them. Mumbai might show 1.92 in blue and 1.94 in pink. That two-point gap is the spread, and it is the market telling you the fair price sits somewhere between the two.

Enter your stake

Tap the blue 1.92 and a slip opens with the price already filled in. Type ₹200. Immediately below, the slip shows what you stand to win: ₹184 profit if Mumbai win, giving a return of ₹384 including your stake back. Nothing has happened yet. This is still just a calculator, and you can change the number as many times as you like.

Check the exposure figure

Now find the liability or exposure line. On a back bet it is simply your stake, so ₹200. This is the step people skip, and it is the step that matters, because on a lay bet the same slip behaves completely differently. Lay Mumbai at 1.94 for ₹200 and your exposure is ₹188, not ₹200, while your maximum win is the ₹200 someone stakes against you. Lay a longshot at 6.0 for ₹200 and your exposure jumps to ₹1,000. Read that number every single time, on every single bet, for the rest of your life on an exchange.

Confirm and check it matched

Confirm. Your available balance drops by ₹200 and that amount now sits as exposure. Then check the status of the bet in your open bets list. Matched means somebody has taken the other side and the bet is genuinely live. Unmatched means you have made an offer that nobody has accepted, which on a busy match odds market almost never happens, but on a thin market can leave you sitting there for an hour thinking you have a position when you do not.

Watch it settle

Leave it alone. Watch the price move instead, because that is where the education is. Mumbai take two wickets in the powerplay and 1.92 becomes 1.55. Nothing about your bet has changed, but the market now rates your side far higher than when you backed it. When the result is official, the exchange settles within a minute or two, credits your profit minus commission on net winnings, and releases the exposure. That is one full cycle.

The one habit worth building tonight

After settlement, open your statement and read the line for that bet. Stake, price, result, commission, closing balance. It takes ten seconds and it turns an abstract balance into something you can actually reconcile. People who read their statements notice unusual settlements early. People who never open them notice nothing until the number looks wrong and they cannot say why.

Reading the board

What the rest of the screen is telling you

The amounts under each price

Under every price there is a smaller number, something like 84,500. That is how much money is currently available at that price. Think of it as a ticket window with a fixed number of tickets. If you want ₹200 of a price where ₹84,500 is on offer, you will get it instantly. If you want ₹50,000 of a price where only ₹6,000 is available, you will get ₹6,000 matched and the rest of your bet will sit unmatched until somebody else joins the queue or you cancel it.

A tempting price on an obscure market often has almost nothing behind it, which means it is not really a price you can take.

Why the price keeps twitching

Cricket prices do not drift smoothly, they jump. Wickets move them hardest, followed by the end of a powerplay, a rain interruption, and then the last three overs of a tight chase where a single boundary can take a team from 3.0 to 1.8 in one delivery. Between those moments the price barely moves at all.

New traders instinctively want to be busiest in the chaotic overs, which is exactly backwards. Missing a move costs you nothing. Chasing one badly costs you real money. Watch the chaos on your first few nights, act only in the calm, and you will learn faster than anyone frantically tapping through the death overs.

Commission, quietly

Nothing on the slip mentions the exchange's fee, because it is charged after settlement on net winnings rather than on turnover. Win ₹184 at a three percent rate and roughly ₹6 is deducted. Lose, and you pay nothing beyond the loss. Ask your manager what your rate is before you deposit rather than discovering it at settlement.

Mistakes

Five ways a first bet goes wrong

All five come from actual reader messages, and none of them involve picking the wrong team.

Tapping pink by accident

The pink box is a lay. On a short-priced favourite a mistaken lay quietly risks several times your intended stake. The colours are your only warning, so learn them before your first tap.

Starting on a session market

Session prices move on almost every delivery. Two sixes in an over can destroy a position that looked comfortable. They are the fastest way to lose a first deposit on a quiet afternoon.

Ignoring unmatched status

An unmatched bet is a request, not a position. People sit through an entire innings believing they are on a team, then discover at settlement that nothing ever went live.

Staking a round thousand

Round numbers feel natural and they are usually far too big for a first bet. The stake should be small enough that the result is genuinely uninteresting to you.

Drifting into the casino tab

Rounds take thirty seconds and the lobby never closes. It is the single easiest place to undo a careful evening of cricket. Treat it as a separate budget or leave it alone entirely.

Depositing again after a loss

The instinct to top up and win it back is the mechanism behind almost every account that ends badly. If you feel it, that is the signal to close the app for the night.

Afterwards

What to do once it has settled

Whether the bet won or lost is close to irrelevant. One bet tells you nothing about your judgement, in the same way one coin toss tells you nothing about the coin. What it does tell you is whether the plumbing works, and that is genuinely worth knowing before you send any real money through it.

So run a withdrawal next. Ask your manager to send whatever is left back to the same bank details you deposited from, and time it. If it lands in half an hour, you have learned something no review could tell you. If it stalls for six hours with vague answers, you have learned something more valuable still, for a few hundred rupees. Our payments guide covers the timings to expect.

Then keep a record. A notes app is fine. Market, price, stake, result, one line on why you did it. People who do this stop misremembering their own record, and they start spotting patterns that are invisible from memory alone.

The next three things to learn

Once one full cycle has gone through, the natural next step is understanding the lay side properly, because that is where an exchange stops resembling a betting app. Our back and lay guide works through both sides with rupee figures and covers session ranges too.

After that, learn to trade out. If you back a team at 2.10 and the price shortens to 1.55, you can lay it back and lock in a profit that pays regardless of the result. It is the single most useful habit an exchange gives you and it has no equivalent on a bookmaker app.

Third, understand how your points actually work: what a point is worth, what limits apply, and how to check that your manager is legitimate. The Cricbet99 ID guide covers all of it, and the exchange overview is the wider context if any of this still feels unfamiliar. If you are on a phone and have not installed anything yet, read the app guide before you download a single file.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a sensible size for a first bet?

Between Rs 100 and Rs 200. The point of a first bet is to see the whole cycle work, not to win money. Once you have watched one bet match, settle and release its exposure, you understand the mechanics well enough to size the next one properly.

Why is my bet showing as unmatched?

An unmatched bet means nobody has taken the other side at your price yet. It is a request, not a live bet. Either wait for the market to come back to you, or cancel it and re-enter at the price currently on offer.

Can I cancel a bet after placing it?

You can cancel an unmatched bet freely. Once a bet is matched it cannot be cancelled, but you can trade out of it by placing the opposite bet on the same selection, which locks in a smaller profit or a smaller loss before settlement.

What does the exposure number actually mean?

Exposure is the money currently tied up in unsettled bets. It is deducted from your available balance, so you cannot stake it again or withdraw it until the market settles. On a lay bet the exposure is far larger than the stake shown.

How long does a market take to settle?

Match odds usually settle within a minute or two of the result becoming official. Session markets settle at the end of the relevant over. If a market is still open more than an hour after the game ends, ask your account manager rather than assuming it was lost.

Ready to place that first bet?

An ID takes about two minutes on WhatsApp. Deposit the minimum, stake ₹100 on match odds, and watch one full cycle before you do anything larger.
